Before Working

Does ABC PLUS arrange for my travel to Japan?

ALTs are responsible for arranging their own transportation to Japan. However, ABC PLUS would be happy to recommend some discount travel agents, if desired. Also, we will pick you up from the airport and take you to your accommodation.

Where will I stay during the initial training and orientation period?

For new overseas recruits, ABC PLUS will arrange and cover the expenses for interim accommodation (hotel or similar shared-room type). This will be your accommodation during the training period before moving into your apartment. All new recruits are provided with this information prior to their arrival in Japan.

What is the training program like?

ABC PLUS provides all new recruits with a comprehensive training program in order to help you understand teaching methods, materials and methodologies. The purpose of these training sessions is to teach you about classroom management, your responsibilities, effective use of games and activities, and so on. We will also offer some suggestions as to how to avoid misunderstandings with the Japanese school system. After the training, you will be confident enough to start your first day.

How do I settle in?

ABC PLUS will assist new ALTs with daily matters such as opening a bank account, registering at the local ward office, connecting gas, water and electricity, and explaining the garbage disposal system. ABC PLUS is also able to offer advice about obtaining a cell phone and Internet access. We want you to be comfortable and happy with your new life in Japan. If there is anything you need, we will do our best to assist you!

How should I bring my money to Japan?

The most reliable method is to bring all funds from overseas in traveller's checks. Cash and bank cashing cards/credit cards are also fine. Bank cheques are not recommended.
